Zinc is a nonferrous metal that is the 24th element in the periodic table. It is chemically similar to magnesium and has five stable isotopes. The name zinc comes from the German word “zin”, which means tin. This metal has many different uses, including water pipes and fixtures.
Zinc is used in the manufacture of water and hydraulic pressure distribution tubes. It has a long history in the water industry and is considered to be one of the most corrosion-resistant metals.
Zinc is produced as an oxide, as a rod or as a powder. It is also produced in bar or plate form, and can be processed to produce rings, washers, and tubing.
Zinc is also used in the manufacturing of high-performance corrosion control coating systems. These coatings provide excellent corrosion resistance in harsh environments. In addition, the coating has minimal environmental impact.
In Europe, the water industry has been using zinc coatings on iron pipes for over 60 years. This corrosion protection is applied by hot dip galvanizing.
However, the process can be expensive. While the initial cost is lower, it can increase by as much as 15 to 20 percent when compared to standard shop coating.
The Flo-Coat process for producing zinc tubing is a good option for those who need higher corrosion resistance. During the process, a welded tube is run through molten zinc while it is on line. After completing the process, the tube is then coated with a clear polymer topcoat.
