silica gel density g ml

Amorphous silica, known as silica gel, is an amorphous and porous form of silicon dioxide (silica). It has an irregular tridimensional framework containing alternating silicon and oxygen atoms with nanometer-scale voids and pores.

It has a high specific surface area that allows it to adsorb water vapor quickly and effectively, thereby making it a useful desiccant. Amorphous silica is a common component in filtration systems for domestic drinking water and can be found in other applications.

Besides being used as a desiccant, silica gel is also an adsorbent for some minerals. For example, it is used in the commercial “ion-exchange” water filter that is marketed to remove certain impurities from the drinking water.

This type of filtration is not yet regulated in the United States. However, it is an effective and economical method for removing certain substances from water.

To measure the adsorption isotherms for nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), and carbon dioxide (CO2) on films with different silica gel concentrations, manometric adsorption measurements were performed in a Belsorp Max and an Belsorp HP manometric equipment at 283, 298, and 313 K until saturation pressures of 4 kPa for water and 50 bar for CH4 and CO2. The adsorption isotherms for the filled polymer film were measured by Fick’s law, as shown in Table 3.

Results of the permeation of gases show that the OH-groups in silica gel have a higher solubility for water vapor than for nitrogen, oxygen, or carbon dioxide. Therefore, PE-LD with dispersed silica gel had a lower CO2 and N2 permeation coefficient, but a higher water vapor permeation coefficient compared to the pure polymer (Table 6).
