What is molybdenum Silicide? Molybdenum Silicide This gray metallic solid is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula MoSi2. It is insoluble, except in nitric or hydrofluoric acids. The two atoms have similar radii, a close electronegativity, and properties that are similar to those of ceramics and metals. It is electrically conductible and forms an oxidation-resistant silica layer at high temperatures. It can be used for high-temperature coatings, electric heating components, integrated electrode film, structural materials and as reinforcing agent for composite materials.

MoSi2 can also be made by a direct reaction between two elements, Mo or Si. Reaction formula
Mo+2Si-MoSi2
Molybdenum Silicide: Physicochemical Properties
MoSi2 (also known as Dalton type intermetallic compound) is the intermediate phase in the MoSi binary alloy with the highest silicon contents. It combines the best of metal and ceramic, and has excellent high-temperature performance. It has a good high-temperature resistance to oxidation, with an oxidation temperature above 1600 that is comparable to SiC. It also has a moderate density (6.24g/cm3), a low coefficient of thermal contraction (8.1×10-6K-1), good electrical and thermal conduction, and brittle transition temperatures (1000) just below ceramic-like hardness. MoSi can be used as an anti-oxidation coating for high temperatures, as well as a structural material at high temperatures.
MoSi2 has molybdenum bonded with silicon via metallic bonds while silicon is covalently attached to silicon. It is not soluble with mineral acids, including aqua regia. However, it is soluble with a mixture containing nitric and hydrofluoric acids.
In an oxidizing environment, dense quartz glass (SiO2) is formed on the surface of the molybdenum silicide to protect it from continuous oxidation. When the heating element temperature exceeds 1700 degrees, a protective SiO2 film is formed. It thickens at a melting level of 1710 and SiO2 fuses into molten drops. Surface extension causes the loss of protective capability. It is possible to form a protective layer again when an element is used continuously with an oxidizing substance. Due to strong oxidation, the element can’t be used at temperatures between 400 and 700degC for a prolonged period of time.

Applications of molybdenum Silicide
In the following industries, molybdenum silicide is used as a high-temperature coating material, an electric heating element, integrated electrode films and structural materials. It can also be found in reinforcing materials for composite materials, wearing-resistant materials and joining materials for structural ceramics.
1) Energy and chemical industries: high-temperature thermocouples (and their protection tubes), melting vessel crucibles.
2) Microelectronics Industry: MoSi2 & other refractory metallic silicides (Ti5Si3, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi3, etc.) These films are ideal for interconnecting lines and large-scale circuits.
Aerospace Industry: The material has been extensively researched and is used as an anti-oxidation high-temperature coat. Specially for turbine engine parts, including blades, impellers combustors tailpipes and sealing devices.
(4) Automotive: supercharger rotors for turbo engines, valve bodies, ignition plugs and engine parts.
