Ionic compounds are made up of ions or cations, but they aren’t named in the same manner as compounds. A compound containing only ions is a binary ionic compound, whereas a compound containing ions and cations is a polyatomic ionic compound. To name a polyatomic ionic compound, you can use the same techniques that you’d use to name a binary ionic compound. The same goes for the other ionic compounds such as acids and bases. Naming ionic compounds is not a rocket science, but there are a few things you’ll need to know before attempting to build a multi-elemental molecule.

The first and most important step is to determine which ions are required to make your desired compound. This is often done by titling the compound after the component’s atomic weight. After that, you can use the formula to assign ions to their correct positions. Using the formula as a guide, you can then proceed to build your multi-elemental molecule.
